Description
Shawbridge was a summer resort about 40 miles north of Montreal, Quebec. Its heydays were during the 1930's and 1940's, when workers from Montreal's garment industry came north for some respite. Bishinsky's provided groceries to the cottage dwellers, and sandwiches and snacks at a lunch counter for the hungry. The festive week-end atmosphere often resulted in spontaneous parties breaking out.The swing bands provided atmosphere for the Lindy, jitterbug, and Fox trot. Contributing to Shawbridge's appeal was a similar establishment across the street, Hammerman's, some hotel/rooming houses, and a number of cottages for rent, weekly and seasonally. Aside from the shtetl-type atmosphere, the North River was also a draw. Ultimately the river's pollution, and the more sophisticated allure of Saint Agathe drew people further north, and by the mid -1950's. Bishinsky's was lost to reality, but alive in memory.
